When I met Brian Bri for the first time, I was taken by his boyish exotic looks and felt he would be the ideal young man to be photographed in for my own interpretation of Caravaggio's 'Boy with a Fruit Basket'. I was assisted by Patryk Chaou, who helped create the set and fruit basket. The fruits we chose include a gourd, lychees, a mango, grapes, a banana, with a variety of large set leaves.
The lighting was somewhat simpler than in Caravaggio's original painting. I opted to have only a single light source as opposed to the two lights that Caravaggio uses in the painting.
My own feeling is that that Brian's expression lacks a certain emotion in his eyes, a sense that he is still the object of my making. Then I look back at the original painting, and I see that there is a similar expression on the boy's face. Wah-la. And perhaps this is just so. It is very much a 'still life', and that stillness is embraced by the model.
